Mallory’s White Kitchen Makeover Reveal
Mallory’s White Kitchen Makeover Reveal
It’s finally done! My kitchen makeover is D O N E!!! I found this rental when we were still back in New York online and I was super excited because it was way bigger than my NY home and had a pool (!!!) and a ton of storage! What more could a girl want?! I knew there were a few things that I wanted to ask to change right off the bat. Since we’re renting, I got my landord’s approval to paint. I asked for the cabinets specifically since that’s not really reversible without a ton of work. The landlord said YES and I was pumped. After we moved in, a couple months went by and I started to get used to the wood cabinets (that were in terrible shape btw… peeling clear coat all over the place) and questioned if I wanted to put in the work to paint them. After all, it’s “just a rental”. Then I kept thinking “ugh.. I hate when people say that!” Just because it’s a rental doesn’t mean you have to live with it. Even this strictest of landlords can’t hold you back from decorating to make your rental feel like home! Here’s what it looked like when we moved in. This photo was from the listing online.
Like I said.. it was fine. Nothing to be excited about. I decided to go for it and I’m SO glad I did because I LOVE how it turned out! First, I painted the cabinets with BB Frösch Chalk Paint Powder and Behr Marquee paint which turned out to be a match made in heaven. I’ll have a full tutorial post up for you on Friday if you want to check that out! I also removed the brown wood blinds to brighten things up. I love how crisp and clean the cabinets look now! The rug is from Urban Outfitters.
When I removed the blinds, I knew I wanted some kind of fun but classy looking window treatment. I went with a upholstered valance that I’ll be showing you how to make soon! It’s an under an hour project so that’s awesome. The cute little plants and planters came from Home Depot.
I created a faux backsplash with a sharpie paint pen. You can get the tutorial from our tutorial post up on A Beautiful Mess. Oh! Did you know we’re writing for them!?! So excited! Also, now I want a donut.
Isn’t it cool? It took about 6-8 hours to do the whole kitchen but Savannah and I did it together and it was pretty fun and totally rewarding!I got this print of the NYC Subway Map and the frame from Ikea and I love it so much! NYC is my favorite place ever so this print was very fitting for my kitchen. I love seeing it everyday!
I got these stools from Amazon and spray painted them with my favorite gold spray paint. Obviously. 😉 I got this amazing sputnik chandelier from Lucent Light Shop via Etsy and I am so obsessed with it. I have it on a dimmer so I can go super bright or dim it down for a more moody dining experience. You know, just in case. 😉 I’ll take you through the full dining room makeover soon and show you how I built the table. What do you think?!
The cabinets look great. I just had mine painted with Behr Marquee as well and wonder if you put anything on top of the paint top to text the finish?
Thanks so much! I used semi-gloss finish on the paint and I finished with polyacrylic.
Thanks.
Can you recommend a brand or supply a link?
What product are you looking for?
Which polyacrylic? Thanks!
Hi! I used Minwax Polycrylic.
I just hit your email about HOW you did the kitchen. Minwax Polycrylic Semi Gloss. I am leaning toward the sarin finish, what made you chose the semi gloss???
The kitchen looks amazing! I can’t believe the back splash is created from a Sharpie paint pen. Ummm…genious! I love the rug as well. The pops of pink just make the space so home-y.
Just saw your tutorial this morning on a beautiful mess an it’s amazing! The kitchen looks so much better and I’m sure so much more fun to live and cook in!
this kitchen is amazing…

I’m in love with your blog. Happy New Year!
This was an awesome makeover. When I first saw the backsplash, I thought that it was real. its amazing that it was done with a sharpie. Great job!
The kitchen looks great, but I’m just wondering how this is a budget makeover under $200 when the light alone is almost $400.
Hi Kayla!
Thank you! Actually, the light fixture is in my dining room. This post is about my kitchen makeover that I did for under $200. Thanks!
xx, Mallory
I was wondering the same thing. Will you take it when you move?
I am planning on taking it with all my moves but we will see! xoxo
I have the same light. Its about $120. A lot less when on sale. Which it many times is.
I love the white cabinets! I don’t know if I would be able to make mine look that good with paint!! Great job 🙂
Hi! It looks amazing! Question: where did you get your dining room table? And, did you sand and/or prime the stools before painting? Thanks!
This is a wonderful inspiration for a kitchen I need to refinish. I hope I get brave enough to try the sprayer. It sounds so fast and professional and no brush marks! Thanks!
Yes, we LOVED using the sprayer it went by way quicker and it was a cleaner look! Good luck! Thanks for stopping by!
Love the gold stools! Was thinking of spray painting some with the same lovely gold paint, how are they holding up??? Did you put anything on top of the paint for durability?
They are holding up pretty good
What is the source for the brass bottle pumps?
Hi! they’re from Target!
Beautiful kitchen, i like your backsplash, the color are perfect!, Fabulous job!!!
