DIY Faux Brick Wall
Our first idea was to create a faux brick wall and as that idea marinated a bit, we thought what’s better than a brick wall? Answer: a brick wall with an world map painted on it. Obviously!
Hi friends! We’re pretty proud of this project that we recently completed as a collaboration with Glidden Paint! You know we’re paint fanatics so we were especially excited about this one. Our first idea was to create a faux brick wall and as that idea marinated a bit, we thought what’s better than a brick wall? Answer: a brick wall with an world map painted on it. Obviously!
Project Materials:
- 4×8′ Panels from Home Depot – My wall was 8×10′ so we used two and a half sheets. 2 full sheets and the 3rd sheet was cut in half vertically and it fit perfectly. YES!
- Drywall Screws
- Spackle
- Putty Knife
- Projector or some mad drawing skills
- White Chalk Marker
- Paint Brushes (One large, one small artistic brush)
- Glidden Paint – We used Glidden Paint DUO Paint + Primer Interior in Eggshell
How To DIY Faux Brick Accent Wall
Step 1 – Find the studs
Find the studs in your wall and hang your Faux Brick Panels to cover your wall. We hung ours with drywall screws.
Step 2 – Project image and trace
Using the projector, display your image on the brick wall and trace the edges with a chalk marker. We turned out the lights for tracing and it was much easier. We used a map of the world we found on the Silhouette Store
Step 3 – Spackle
Once you have your shape traced on the wall, use a putty knife to spread spackle around the wall in various places. This gives it a lot more texture and adds to the rustic look of the wall. It makes it SO much better in person rather than using just the brick panel. The spackle texture brought it to the next level for sure!
Step 4 – “Dry Brush” your brick accent wall
Next, using your Glidden Paint (We used Dove White in Eggshell) and a dry paint brush, start to “dry brush” your wall. We chose this paint because it has fantastic coverage and going over a brick-like texture and dark red tones we could get the coverage we needed but also could scale back where we wanted it to look distressed. Apply more paint to your brush if you want more coverage and use a very light dipping for the dry-brush technique.
Painting Tip
You just want a teeny bit of paint on your brush to get the rustic, worn look. Not too much paint just yet!
With light strokes, cover your wall in random areas. On the part of the brick that we left exposed, we did this VERY lightly to make it look more worn and authentic.
Step 5 – Painting
Next, you’ll want to fill in your wall with paint! We loved the variation of thin, dry brushed paint and fully painted sections. Where the walls join in the corners, you’ll want to do a heavier coat to make it blend into the other walls.
Once you have your wall covered to your liking, you’re done! It’s just a few steps and this entire process only took us a couple hours! Talk about time well spent! We LOVE how it turned out and now I’m dying to share the full room makeover with you.
Oh! The colorful Tribal pillow is from Target, chairs are from Past Vintage in downtown Mesa, AZ (LOVE that place!) and the plant is from Home Depot. The cowhide rug is from Amazon and the faux fur rug is from Ikea.
Fresh Salmon! I’m picking out new paint for one of our rooms right now, and that’s actually one of the top contenders. I love the balance of orange in the color, and it’s just muted enough to play nicely with all the other colors already in the room.
This is such a great giveaway; thank you so much! Plus, that wall looks AMAZING.
Thanks Hannah!
My favorite Glidden paint is Approaching Storm!
