Easy DIY Sharpie Wall Tutorial

I am finally writing up this Sharpie wall tutorial for you guys! I drug my feet for months because I didn’t take process photos (bad blogger!) so I’m going to show you on the wall already completed and do a lot of explaining in the process. I promise, it’s so so so sooooooo easy!

Materials:

  • Sharpie Paint Pen (I used gold in medium tip)
  • Level
  • Pencil
  • Ladder or step-stool (depending on ceiling height)

Level: Beginner

Time: 1-4 hours (depending on size of wall)

First, I started from the bottom and measured and marked (with a pencil – lightly!) every 12″ both vertically and horizontally.

Then, using a the straight edge of the level, I drew a giant grid of 12″ squares on the entire wall with a pencil. I started at the bottom left corner and worked my way up then over to the right. I did this because I don’t care if there is a halfsie or less square at the top but I didn’t want the bottom one to get cut off if I had started at the top. Maybe you’ll get lucky and your wall will be exactly 8 squares tall or so if you have standard 8′ ceilings.  The vault in ours threw it off but it still works the exact same.

Next, use a straight edge (or your level) to go over your grid with a Sharpie paint pen. Make SURE it’s a paint pen, not a permanent marker because permanent marker is a nightmare to paint over.

Finally, use your Sharpie paint pen and a straight edge (or your level) and draw X’s. I didn’t do pencil on this step since it doesn’t need measuring and pretty difficult to mess it up! *wink*

I love this wall so much and I’m currently recreating a similar look in my boys’ bedroom! I hope you enjoyed this Sharpie Wall Tutorial! Sorry I didn’t have a bunch of process photos but its SO easy! It’s literally just drawing a grid and putting X’s in the boxes. Let me know if you have questions! It’s difficult to believe you did this without making any marks where you stopped with the paint pen. I’m wondering how you did it so evenly and how many paint pens it took to do this size wall? I love it and would like to play copy cat! Thanks for the idea!

The paint pen doesn’t drip or anything so its quite the opposite. In some spots, I’d have to go over it again versus leaving a mark. It’s super easy! I used a medium tip pen and I just needed one for this wall. Thanks!

Great idea, Mallory! As you are using a sharpie, I was wondering how would you correct a mistake while drawing a line? How can I erase any mistake, spot or just a bad line? Thank you.

Thank you very much for sharing this great idea! It looks very creative and will look great in my living room. I want to find baby pictures of my baby and bring that idea to life. I think that he will be very pleased to see this, because he has a long time in College and rarely comes home. I hope that you will continue to share this useful, interesting and positive type of content with us!
