Park Home Reno: Back Patio Ideas and Patio Progress

This post is sponsored by The Home Depot. All opinions are 100% my own, always.

Time for an update! We have been dragging you guys along our backyard journey’s over the past few months and I thought I’d take the time to answer some questions and give you an update on our back patio that we recently added to our home.

A little background, our home sits on 1/2 of an acre and we have a large backyard space but besides our deck, had very little space to entertain. Rewind back to March, this area was dirt and a tree. The tree was beautiful but as it grew, it became too close to the window/house and had to be removed. We took the opportunity to make a full backyard patio that this backyard was really lacking.

When we designed this space I had several must-haves for this space. Our must haves included:

  • Easily accessible from inside the house
  • Awesome “floors”
  • Relaxing Hot tub/Pergola space
  • Fire pit lounge area
  • Dining Space
  • Outdoor kitchen/grilling area

First, we cleared out the trees, bushes, old concrete walkway and leveled the space with a slight grade to allow water to flow away from the house. We decided where we were going to build our pergola and dug the footers for the posts. We installed the pressure treated posts in the ground and had 700 square feet of concrete poured in this space (around the posts).

When the concrete was we ordered our tile and began work on building the pergola. I still want to add a few details but the pergola / hot tub space is my favorite and we use it nearly every day! Unfortunately, I do not plan to write a tutorial on the pergola because I made up the design as we went. Since we had to install a new electrical panel (Thanks to my bro-in-law, Andrew) we used that panel to add a power outlet and a light switch to the pergola post to turn the string lights and overhead fixture we installed for the hot tub. Finally, I added outdoor curtains to the pergola to add some privacy and whimsy to the space. I love how it turned out!

Our hot tub is by Caldera Spas and it’s literally my favorite thing in our ENTIRE house! We use it every single night and it helps me wind down from the day. It has a million jets, seats 6 people and it the epitome of relaxation. We designed the pergola and patio space around it specifically. If you don’t have a hot tub, I highly suggest you consider a Caldera Spa. It will change your life.

Once the tile arrived, I spent literally weeks installing this brick tile from Home Depot. I will do a full post on the tile soon! Adding the brick against the blue house was a game changer. I have always wanted a red brick and blue house so adding this red brick look made me so very happy! Tutorial coming soon, I promise!

We installed the Schlage Camelot Connect Smart Lock with Alarm to the back door which has been amazing! I got it from Home Depot. I have these Schlage Sense locks on most of our exterior doors and they are a game changer. I am able to assign my friend’s or babysitters a door code so they can come through the back door if they’re helping us with our dog or the kids. I love that it has an alarm on it too.

For the fire pit area, I used an old set of patio furniture I had from American Furniture Warehouse and updated it with some new black and white cushions from At Home Store. We got the fire pit from At Home too! I love the fire pit we chose because it’s gas and the propane tank hide inside the base of the fire pit. No frustrating charcoal or mess from wood burning like we’ve had before! The pineapple pillows are from HomeGoods in-store.

Our dining space is one of my favorite areas. My table is from World Market and it’s on sale right now. The chairs are from Wal-Mart and you can see the chair saga on our Instagram stories. The umbrella is also from Wal-Mart. We love their outdoor patio furniture and decor. The rug is from Overstock.com.

The entire south side of our yard is still dirt so as soon as we finish the main areas and hardscape, we will have sprinklers installed and get sod put in. I can’t wait to have GRASS!!! The dirt has been getting our house, inside and out, so dusty as it gets windy in the evenings. We have a LOT more to do back here but I am so excited to see progress! I will share my kids playset and basketball court makeovers very soon! To be honest, I keep waiting to post until out landscaping around these areas because I know it will be such a dramatic transformation but I know most people like to see progress as it happens so I’m going to try to be better about sharing the progress here, not just on Instagram stories! So stay tuned, my friends.
