DIY World Map Wall Mural
So, after much debating with myself, I decided to swap bedrooms with my kids. My bedroom was downstairs and looked like this…
Well, all of that got moved upstairs and we painted the room Behr Classic Taupe to match the rest of the house.
Then, I remembered this world map wall mural I saw in Pottery Barn that I had my eye on for quite a while.
So cute huh!? I really love the idea but I didn’t want too much blue in the bedroom. I wanted to keep the walls as neutral as possible. I decided to keep the Classic Taupe and hand paint the thin outline of the map on the wall.
I found the map image on my Silhouette software which is available to anyone to download even if you do not have a Silhouette. You can download the software and purchase the image here. It is $0.99
Next, I printed the image on transparency paper and used my overhead projector to project the image onto the wall. My steady hand hubby used a pencil and very lightly traced the outline of the map image.
Next, I used the premixed Rustoleum Navy Blue paint that I had left over from the Stenciled Biplane Dresser I did. I used a tiny little paint brush (about 1/4″ wide) and hand painted over the pencil tracings. It took about 2.5 hours to do the whole thing but I split it over 2 days so it was pretty simple.
Not perfect but I LOVE IT and so do my little boys! They keep asking where we live and which country is which. 🙂 I’ll show you the rest of the room real soon! I just have a few finishing touches to do in there. What do you think!? So fun for an airplane room right!?

What a fabulous idea! I love this, even doing just the state you live in would be great! (and simpler for someone that likes the simpler way of things) 😉
This is one reasons I love DIY projects. They don’t have to be perfect to be great.
The map turned out geat…I bet it would look nice in a den

What a great idea–love it!
Pinning it now! I also love how you just happen to have an overhead projector around, where could I find one?
Love this! What a great idea!
This is great! I’ve always wanted a wall like this when I was a kid 🙂

What a GREAT idea! I never would have thought of projecting it on the wall like that & outlining it. Bravo, I love it!
I just found your site from this list of linkys & I LOVE it 🙂 Going to like you on FB and all that jazz 🙂 http://thepinjunkie.blogspot.com/p/link-ups.html
It turned out fantastic! 🙂
so so cool!!! What a great project!
Geography enthusiasts would love to have a mural like this in their homes! But don’t you think the map would look better if you added some color to it? Just to give the mural some depth. A lot of people have been using this technique to make wall murals. Isn’t it so easy? Good luck on more DIY wall murals in the future! 🙂
