Mallory’s Classic Colonial: Breakfast Nook Makeover
I used to spend little to no time in this space before I did this very bold and brave (for me!) makeover in our breakfast nook. If you’ve been around for a while, you know I LOVE navy blue so I went all out navy in this space.
When we bought this home, this space was totally neglected and more of a passageway than a room. When we removed the old kitchen nearby, I knew this space could be the perfect breakfast nook off of our new kitchen!
We replaced the floors and painted everything white for a temporary fix. A while later, I borrowed the light fixture for our new laundry room makeover which left this space totally neglected and empty. Nothing a little paint and decor couldn’t fix.

How to Hang Plates on a Wall
Time needed: 1 hour.
DIY Plate Wall
- Find your wall
Pick a wall in your home that needs a statement piece. We call these opportunities “creative moments”! I chose my breakfast nook because the light blue and white glass would pop off the dark navy color of my walls. This room was also the best choice because it didn’t have any other decor that would make the walls appear busy.
- Determine the size of your display
Using blue painters tape (to avoid ripping off paint on the walls), I created a guide to figure out the approximate size of the display.
- Place the tape on a flat surface
Next step is to move your tape to a flat surface where you can play with the arrangement of your plates before it’s final!
- Add plate hangers to your plates

Ta-da! Your plate wall is complete!
I have been collecting blue glass dishes and vases for years now and finally decided to hang plates on a wall! It has been such a fun collection to build! Not only is it beautiful, but I love that I can have a mixture of vintage pieces and newer pieces. I would love to have a collection of original blue china, but they take time to find! I have been supplementing my collection with treasures from HomeGoods and other stores in the meantime!
