Modern Ranch Reno: New Front Door and Hardware

My front door was in need of a major makeover. At my last house I had a Schlage key pad lock and I loved it. When I say love it I mean LOVE IT! I could never ever go back to a keyed entry front door lock.  There is something very convenient about having a keyless entry. It’s so nice for friends and family that may need to get into my house. It is so nice when I have to carry in loads from the car and my 5 year old can unlock the front door for me. Then to top it all off this hardware that I used on my front is connected to an app on my phone and it sends me a message every time that my door is locked and unlocked. It gives me such a peace of mind. The second I moved into my new house I knew that it was one of the first things that I wanted to add to the new house. I wanted/needed a new front door to go along with the new hardware. So that is exactly what we did.

I mean she is soooooo pretty right?!?!?!?!?

In case you forgot here is what the house looked like when we first bought it. I mean just looking at this picture has reminded me how far we have come so far.

This is the original door and hardware from when the house was built in the 80’s. We had been in the house for over a year when we finally replaced the door and hardware so while I waited to get the new door I did paint the door black. It helped for a second especially because I got the house painted (which you can see in this post HERE) before we replaced the door. I really really needed a new door and to make matters worse this door hardware was totally broken and so the door could not even open. For the last 4 months the door would not shut without using my total body strength and my kids could not even shut it. So to say that I was so ready for a new door and hardware was a total understatement.

We cleaned up the front yard and it was so much better. But still I need a door that would actually open.

Picking the right front door

After looking everywhere for a door that I loved and that I felt that fit the style of my house I decided on this Shaker style door and sidelite from Therma-Tru Benchmark, available exclusively at Lowe’s. Totally in love with this classic looking door and I love that the window panes on the door match the style of the original windows.  Also loving that the side lite style matches the door perfectly. I ordered the door and the sidelite custom at Lowe’s. We took the measurement of our door and our sidelite down to our local Lowe’s store and the associate in the Millwork Department went through everything with us. Since it was going to be a custom size. He called us the next day with the price. We ordered the door that day and within a few weeks the new door had arrived and it was ready for install. Lowe’s had a local company that they hired out to come and do the install.  The install included the hardware install and it was all done within one day.

The door came just primed and after looking every where for the perfect color I went with this dark green color. I mixed two different colors to get exactly what I wanted. I used the Modern Masters Front Door paint in successful and natural mixed together. Since I have used this paint line before and I really liked it I went with the same front door paint. It never fades and goes on so nicely. I wanted to paint to be totally perfect and so I hired Johnson Paint company here in Mesa, AZ to come and spray the door and I totally love how it turned out.

That door hardware is just so pretty!

I just can’t explain in words what a big day this was. Loving this hardware. It really is just life changing. After having a keyless entry at my last house it was a MUST at the new house. Just like my last house I knew that Schlage was going to be the way to go. I have experience with their product. And I have used it before so I know that I love their products and I love the look of them. The hardware I went with was the Schlage Connect Touchscreen Deadbolt with Century Trim paired with the Century Handleset with Lever in satin nickel finish.

This hardware is just so pretty and I could not love it more.

Not only does the door look awesome for the outside it so beautiful from the inside too. On the inside of the door I went with the paint color Carbon by Behr paint. I love this black color and I have used it many times in my house.

This is what the inside of the old door looked like when we first bought the house. The front door was very old and very dated.

Now the new door is gorgeous and makes a big statement in this entryway.

Loving how the new front door and new hardware looks together. I also love how convenient this new door hardware is, and I would highly recommend this hardware and I really love how beautifully everything turned out.

  1. I just love it!!! We used to own a business that dealt in windows, doors and siding and I had so much fun helping people figure out how to update their homes and what would look best. I love you house and wish I could find something similar here as we get ready to move. xo Diana

  2. Any problems with the door molding on window shrinking after painting???? I read multiple reviews stating this happened??
