How to Style Throw Pillows

I get asked all the time about small design tips and tricks that make a HUGE impact to your home. I have a few answers – paint, curtains, and THROW PILLOWS!

Throw pillows allow you do breathe new life into a space with minimal effort and typically, on a small budget! You can change the vibe or style of your room with a few new pillows and for someone who loves to change things up – it’s something I do often!

Once you’ve decided to change your throw pillows, picking out new ones is no easy task!

Evaluate what you already have

Do you have a few throw pillows you love and want to keep? Bring one or take a photo of them for when you go shopping! It’s important to know the color, texture, and style of your pillow to make sure they flow with your new ones.

How to Style Throw Pillows

  1. Solid Color Pillow

Add a big solid or texture styled pillow for the back or start of your pillow layout.

  2. Large Print Pillow

Add a patterned pillow in front of the solid colored one that goes with the colors of the room.

  3. Small Print Pillow

Lastly, add a small pillow in the front that has a subtle pattern and matches the color scheme.

The Classy Clutter No Fail Pillow Structure:

Solid | Large Scale Print | Small Scale Print

If you are struggling with your throw pillows combination, this is a great rule of thumb! Of course, there are no “rules” with design! You can have any combination you like!

1. Solid color

BLUE | PINK | SILVER | BURGUNDY

2. Large scale print

  • Oversized floral
  • Striped
  • Patterns that are visually larger

ONE | TWO | THREE | FOUR | FIVE | SIX

SEVEN | EIGHT | NINE

3. Small scale print

  • Typically more busy
  • Animal print
  • Textured with a lot of movement

ONE | TWO | THREE | FOUR | FIVE

TIP: Always size up on pillow inserts! Example: 20×20 pillow cover needs a 22×22 insert to make your pillow look full!

Pillow inserts are so important!

There is nothing worse than a saggy or droopy throw pillow! I prefer to buy throw pillow covers and use my own inserts instead of buying and here is why.

Over the years, your throw pillows are going to lose fullness! Instead of getting rid of the entire pillow, I can just replace the insert and have it look nice and full again! If I am buying pillows from a store, I try my best to make sure they have a zipper so I can replace the insert if needed. Unless it’s just too cute….then I get it anyway! haha
