Why we are learning how to install hardwood floors

My master bedroom has old carpet in it that we have been wanting to replace since we moved in. We are gearing up to do a photoshoot in this room and that was the final push I needed to continue the flooring into our master!

Why we decided to learn how to install hardwood floors

My husband, Kyle, is a licensed contractor. With this job, he has done a little and lot of just about everything! However, when it comes to hardwood floors, he typically has the flooring experts do their thing!

When we were doing our kitchen, we had them professionally installed because we were new to this specific collection of flooring and wanted it to be absolutely perfect. When it’s a large investment like flooring, it’s often best to have it professionally installed to ensure that is done correctly. I couldn’t imagine having to redo flooring that wasn’t installed right the first time! (Not that I don’t trust you, Kyle!!!)

Although we have planned on it for years now, the starts aligned and we had the time and the budget to take on this project. We made another order of the flooring and while we waited for it to arrive, we ripped up the carpet. We had leftover flooring from the kitchen and Kyle decided he wanted to take a stab at the install since he watched it go in last time. It was definitely a learning curve, but he did a super great job and decided to take on the rest of the room after some practice.

What we learned when installing hardwood floors

It’s not an easy job. Like anything, it takes practice! Which is something you may not be able to do if you are thinking about installing hardwood floors yourself. These are an engineered hardwood so they do go in a bit easer than traditional hardwood.

Size of the space
Because our master bedroom is a relatively small space, it wasn’t too much of a hassle to do it ourselves. If the space were any bigger, we would likely hire this out. Also, our bedroom is a rectangle and so we didn’t have to make any crazy cuts.

Investment
How big is your investment? Would it be okay if you needed to reorder additional flooring because of mistakes and errors? Definitely something to consider!

Time
Installing hardwood floors yourself is going to take 10x longer than if you hired a professional. How much time do you have for this project?

Our recommendation: Should you learn how to install hardwood floor?!

Maybe.

We do love the end result and highly recommend engineered hardwood if you are considering it! If you have ever done any type of backsplash or tile work, laying hardwood floors isn’t too different! Especially if you are using a tongue and groove type of flooring like we are. It really depends on how comfortable you are! A little bit of practice and it can be done! Start small with one bedroom and see how you feel!
