It’s no secret that I’m head over heels in love with my Silhouette Cameo. I tell people I use it on a daily basis and I don’t think they believe me but it’s true. I even have a special setup in my craft room where I ran the power cord through my craft island so it’s always ready to go! It is my “go-to” crafting tool. That being said, this was key element in designing my floral faux wallpaper for my bathroom that I showed you yesterday. If you missed that post, check out my glamorous bathroom reveal here.
It goes without saying that the faux wallpaper is the focal point and the BEST part of this tiny little bathroom. I decided to create a floral focal wall using my Silhouette machine and some gold vinyl. Since I sell vinyl decals on Etsy, I had enough gold vinyl in my stash to cover every wall in my house but decided against it. 😉 I live with 5 boys in my family and I’m not sure they’d appreciate that very much. I’m lucky they didn’t mind the uber girly bathroom. Surprisingly, they all think it looks awesome! Yahoo!
Here’s what I did to create the Floral Faux Wallpaper.
First, I opened my Silhouette Studio Design Software and searched for a flower that I loved. There were so many options but I fell in love with the Dahlia flower. You can purchase that flower shape here for $0.99.
Next, I placed the flowers in different sizes on a 12×24″. You can see that I left a few hanging off of the space so only half of the flower will get cut out when I ran my vinyl through my machine. I did this as to not waste the empty space and I used several “half flowers” on the wallpaper. You’ll see that soon.
Next, I ran my vinyl through my Silhouette machine. It took a few short minutes to cut out all of the details on the flowers. This is where I got really excited because I could envision exactly what it was going to look like. When it was done cutting, I headed to the bathroom and just started peeling them off of the backing paper and sticking them on the wall. I started in the corner and just alternated which sizes of flowers I used. It was really fun to see it come to life.
I obviously needed several sheets so I ran another sheet of vinyl through my machine while I stuck these on the wall. By the time I was done applying them, the, next sheet was ready to go. I repeated this until I had enough flowers for the entire wall. Can you tell worked on this right after I put the kiddos to bed? The toothbrush and bath towel left out were a dead give away. 😉
You can see close up that my walls are slightly textured but once it’s all put together, it’s not noticeable at all. To tell you the truth, I didn’t even notice it until I took the close up shot! Either it’s very minor or I have terrible eyesight. Definitely both. 😉
As I was applying, I noticed that it needed to be “filled in” I didn’t like the white negative space left as I started putting the flowers on so I decided to use the negative space left over from cutting the flowers and “fill in” that space with the petals. I love that it looks more polished and complete with the petals in between each flower.
I repeated applying flowers and filling in the space with petals until the wall was done. It took me about 1.5-2 hours for the whole wall. Can you imagine how many hours if I hand painted or stenciled this??? Not to mention, it’s totally removable so this is PERFECT for renters like me!
Sorry for the close up of the toilet! haha!
Wait, you don’t have a Silhouette machine to make this?? No worries dude, we’ve got you covered. You can purchase this design in a variety of colors on my Etsy shop! Heck ya! See the design here. >> https://www.etsy.com/listing/215681728/flower-vinyl-wall-decals-faux-wallpaper

October 29, 2014 at 9:50 pmCan you update us on if the vinyl still sticks well in a humid bathroom … Does the water/ steam from a shower make it peel at all ?
Thanks

October 30, 2014 at 6:47 pmHi Stephanie! The vinyl sticks really well. I’ve used it in bathrooms that get steamy during showers and have had no problems. Thanks!

October 31, 2014 at 11:37 amYou ROCK that faux wallpaper! I’ve been in love with it too and yes, it’s out of the budget. What a great idea to make your own, of course!
Got my Silhouette the other day and now I’ve got to learn how to use it to make some fab projects like this.
P.S. Where are good places to get the vinyl?
Mallory & Savannah
November 1, 2014 at 12:59 amHey Jessica!
I get it from either Expressions Vinyl or US Cutter. I buy in bulk (since I run a vinyl shop) so US Cutter is the cheapest for the Oracal vinyl that I love but you have to buy a lot from them to get a good deal. I recommend Expressions vinyl to most people. Expressions Vinyl has fantastic prices and you can get large rolls for a great price! xoxo! Hope you’re feeling great! Only a few weeks left, right?! xoxo

November 4, 2014 at 1:43 pmWould you be able to help me figure out how to use my Silhouette to cut a tree about 36″ tall and 30″ wide? It makes sense to overlay the panels but I wasn’t sure if the software has something to help out with this task.

November 4, 2014 at 5:47 pmMy daughter had wanted this wallpaper for a long time but the cost was prohibitive. She saw your brilliant idea and sent it to me as I own one of the original Silhouettes. I have two questions for you before I commit to making this for her:) What sizes did you make your flowers, because I think I might me limited by my machine, and where can I buy foil vinyl? Your response, via email if possible, would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much!
Sharon
November 4, 2014 at 5:50 pmSorry, just saw your reply about Expressions Vinyl so that question is answered but still need to know about the flower sizes:)

November 4, 2014 at 11:10 pmHi Sharon!
I just made varying sizes. The smallest was 3.5″ and the largest was 8.5″. The Silhouette SD should be able to do this, no problem. I used to have one! My vinyl wasn’t foiled, just gold metallic.

November 5, 2014 at 11:03 pmYour bathroom looks to be about the same size as mine and I can’t believe how different they look. I LOVE your custom “wallpaper” look. It is elegant, beautiful, but not over the top gaudy. Just Perfect! Ugh. Now I want to redo my bathroom.

November 11, 2014 at 9:17 pmThis is absolutely amazing!! I’ve been coming up with ideas for my half bath, which I’ve been wanting to include with gold. And to think I used to hate gold! It’s my new obsession!! This is definitely going on my main inspiration board. Kudos to you for the fabulous inspiration!
Unfortunately I do not own a Silhouette, nor do I think I will be in the near future. I apologize if someone mentioned this in a previous post, because I only got to read about half of them! I noticed you mentioned owning an Etsy shop. Would this be something you would be interested or even could sell? I definitely wouldn’t want to go on more than one wall….if that helps persuade you at all 😉
Thank you for taking the time to read this….and again for the amazing inspiration 🙂

November 22, 2014 at 10:37 pmFirst of all, this is amazing!!!
Secondly, can you give the specifics on the vinyl? There are so many types of gold, even within the Silhouette brand…matte, glossy, foil, etc. I found an aztec pattern that I would love to try but I love the metallic gold that you used. I don’t know which one to order…matte, glossy, etc.
Thank you!

February 8, 2016 at 1:45 pmThis is what I have been looking for! I was planning to do a wall using vinyl on my silhouette, and was searching Pinterest for it. I was curious about how big to cut them and relieved that yours weren’t as big as I expected them to need to be! This is goregous and much better than doing wallpaper! I can’t wait to try it! Thanks for sharing! I will have to start following you:-)
