DIY Oversized Chalkboard Calendar

12-After 2

Materials Needed:

Note: Follow all ScotchBlue™ Painter’s Tape package instructions for proper surface cleaning and prep, adhesion and removal.

1- Paint board

Step 1: Make sure your plywood is free from any splinters or cracks. Sand edges smooth if necessary using a sanding block. Paint the entire sheet of plywood with chalkboard paint using a lint-free foam roller. Allow to dry for 24 hours.

2- Tape border around the calendar

Step 2: Use ScotchBlue Delicate Surfaces Painter’s Tape to tape off a border around the outside perimeter of your calendar; this will act as a placeholder for your border. We chose to do a traditional monthly calendar on the left side and a large “Notes” section on the right side. Our border was approximately 4 inches on the bottom, sides and approximately 8 inches on the top of the calendar to allow space to label the days of the week.

3- Use Larger Tape for around the calendarTo make this easier, we used 4 rows of the 1.88 inch wide ScotchBlue Delicate Surfaces Painter’s Tape.

4- Tape 6 inch squares

Step 3: Next, tape off 5 rows of 7 squares. We taped off 6 inch squares leaving 1” of space in between each square on the calendar grid.

5- Tape off notes section

Step 4: For the “Notes” section, tape off a rectangle inside of the border you taped off in Step 2. We placed our tape approximately 1” inside of the border.

6- Press and seal tape

Step 5: Next, press down on all edges of the tape to seal the tape using a putty knife or 5-in- 1 tool. This helps to prevent bleeding of paint underneath the board.

7- Peel off border tape

Step 6: Remove all of the tape around the border of your plywood.

8- Complete Taping

9- Paint around squares

Step 7: Paint entire board white except the inside of the “Notes” section.

10 - After paint, remove tape

Step 8: While paint is tacky (not completely dry) remove the tape by pulling the tape back on itself and pulling away from the surface at a 45-degree angle. Allow paint to dry thoroughly.

Step 9: Use stickers, stencils, paint pens or vinyl decals (like we did!) to label the days of the week and your notes section. Hang on the wall and admire your cute new calendar!

  2. Awesome! Do the Etsy decals match the size of this chalkboard calendar? I made a calendar following your dimensions and want to make sure the letters are the right size 🙂
