Hi friends! We are SUPER excited about this cute little project we whipped up in collaboration with one of our favorite stores… EVER, The Home Depot. Every month on the third Thursday of the month, The Home Depot provides a FREE in-store workshop for women to create something awesome! Usually it is a basic/beginner building project that you can make with materials from The Home Depot! The Home Depot wants to inspire women to be do-it-yourselfers and so we do we! These hands-on workshops help women to be more comfortable with power tools and building materials. It’s SO fun!
The next DIH Workshop is June 18th, 2015! This THURSDAY from 6:30 – 8pm at your local Home Depot! You must pre-register here to attend. This month is this DIY Outdoor Serving Station which is perfect for Summer! We created one with our own spin on it and we love how it turned out! When you think of a Serving Station, most people would assume drinks. While it is perfect for drinks, we wanted to think outside of the box (see what I did there? 😉 ) and create a Summer S’mores Serving Station! Oh, the alliteration.
Step One: Cut your wood.
Cut your wood to size using a circular saw, make the following 6 cuts from your one-by-six board:
(2) 18 3/4 inch pieces
(2) 22 1/2 inch pieces
(1) 17 1/4 inch piece
(1) 10 7/8 inch piece
Then cut the project panel into a 2-foot by 18-inch rectangle.
Step Two: Build the Box.
Next, create a box using the 22 1/2 in pieces for the top and bottom and the 18 3/4″ pieces for the sides. Check to make sure that the top and bottom pieces fit between the side pieces. Lastly, check that the outer measurements are 24 by 18 3/4, then make sure you keep the box square – glue and nail each corner together.
Step Three: Attach the Divider and Shelf
Find the center of the box – 12 inches across the top and bottom, mark with a pencil and insert the 17 1/4 inch board. Glue it and nail it in place.
Now, do the same with the 10 7/8 inch board, positioning it horizontally at the 9 3⁄8 inch mark. Again, secure it with wood glue and nails.
Step Four: Attach the Table Top
Stand the box upright, and butt the table top up against the bottom. From there, pull it back about an eighth of an inch, leaving just enough of a gap to then attach the two hinges.
Step Five: Attach the Chain and Hook and Eye
Next up is the drawbridge-style chain; this is the part that supports the tabletop once it’s mounted. With the box and tabletop still resting on the workbench, cut the chain in half. From the outer corners of the table top, measure back two inches and in one inch. Then use two 5/8 inch screws to attach the chain.
Stretch one side of the chain upward. Make sure it’s nice and taut before attaching it to the inside of the box with another 5/8″ screw. You may need to cut off some of the excess chain with your pliers. Repeat the process on the other side.
When the chain is securely fastened, it’s time to attach the hook & eye. Close the table top against the box, then screw the eye into the side of the tabletop, and screw the hook into the outside of the box. Measure carefully; you’ll want to make sure the hook and eye are close enough to latch.
Step Six: Attach the Mounting Plates and Hang
Now, attach the two three-inch corner braces to the inside of the top two corners of the box, and use the deck screws to mount it to the wall. Of course, a full bar can be pretty heavy, so be sure to hang it somewhere sturdy.
Optional Step: Make it your own!
We wanted it to be unique to our personalities and homes so we decided to paint it, you guessed it, PINK! We applied this Yum! Yum! vinyl decal to the inside of the door, painted over it then removed the decal to show the wood grain beneath. We also stapled black and white striped outdoor fabric to the back of the box. We love how pretty it is when it’s opened up!
We got some s’mores fixings and some cold drinks and created this fun little space. We think a s’mores girls night is in order!
Alright friends, time to round up some gal pals and get ready to make your own on Thursday, June 18, 2015 from 6:30 – 8pm at your local Home Depot store. You have to register beforehand so you can do that here >> REGISTER HERE!
