Prescott View Home Reno: Fireplace Remodel

The renovation continues! We are chipping away at the renovation of my house (Follow along using #mallorysprescottviewhome on Instagram and Facebook!) and today we’re tackling the fireplace remodel. When we moved in, it was solid brick painted a dark brown/taupe color with a black mantel. I knew that I wanted to do a fireplace remodel since it would be a nightmare or dang near impossible to remove the layers of paint to expose the brick and I didn’t really want painted brick in this home. Right when we moved in, Savannah and I painted it white and it definitely brightened it up a bit!

Once we removed the wall, I removed all of the brick using a hammer drill (starting around $50 to rent or buy from Home Depot) and it was shockingly fun!

Once the brick was removed, I painted the brass pieces on the fireplace with High Heat Spray Paint.  After it was painted, I removed the metal straps that were attached to the wall and sanded down the wall to remove any debris and left over mortar from the bricks.

Since we had the wall open in the back we installed a power outlet and cable for our tv. I’m not usually a fan of tvs over the fireplace but in this room we didn’t have another space I liked better for the tv and we love to watch movies together so we wanted a tv in here. After it’s all said and done, I don’t mind the tv at all.

Okay confession: this next photo is from my old house but I love that it kind of shows you how to arrange it. I didn’t want to give dimensions because every single fireplace we’ve done (out of the 4 we’ve built/in the middle of building) have been very different dimensions. I will say what mine were for this project but I strongly suggest you do what fits YOUR space if you want to recreate this! We used 1/2″ MDF to build the basic shape of the mantel.

The four pieces that make up the “legs” of the mantel were 8″ wide and 48″ tall. I used wood glue and 1 1/2″ L brackets to attach them together and reinforced with nails using my brad nailer.

My middle piece that joins the two legs was 14″ x 49″. I used 4″ mending plates to attach the center piece to the “legs”.

Next, we dressed it up with some trim and added some 1×4″s to the mantel pieces to beef it up a bit. I used paintable caulk and wood filler to close all of the gaps and fill the nail holes.

Then, I painted the whole thing Ultra Pure White (Trim and Door Paint).

For the tile, I used marble subway tile that I found at Lowes and laid it in a cross hatch pattern. Check out my video for laying tile if you’ve never done it before. It’s not very hard, promise! After caulk, wood filler, grout and 3 coats of Ultra Pure White paint. Here she is! If you’re considering a fireplace remodel, DO IT! It makes such a huge difference and nothing about it was difficult! Yay!

Here’s a peek into my living room and kitchen area! I can’t believe how different it is. We are loving our home and that’s kind of the point of this all anyway, isn’t it?

  1. I love love all of this! Where did you get the fireplace grate/cover? The metallic is the perfect touch! And…where did you get The family Proclamation sign? I can’t wait to see the rest of the room.

  2. The fireplace is beautiful! But honestly, my favorite part is the giant “The Family: A Proclamation to the World” print. It’s pretty clear what’s important to you and I love it! I’m sure people comment on it when they walk in your family room. =)
