Recover a throw pillow in 15 minutes (or less!)

Hi friends!  I have been in super crazy busy woman project mode this week! I haven’t had too many super exciting things to post because everything isn’t quite done is definitely making wonderful progress! I have been super busy filling orders for my etsy shop and therefore making a bunch of pillows! I also made my boys a red chevron pillow for their bed that I’m a little in love with! 🙂 Anyway, I posted this when I first started blogging but wanted to share it again for those that are new around here.
Maybe this is a super simple project (if you can sew) but when I was first learning to sew and make pillows, I didn’t know how to recover a throw easily. I wanted a pillow cover I could remove and wash if necessary, I do live with 3 boys ya know!
Here’s how I did it….
You will need:
A pillow to recover
Fabric (I used approx. 3/4 yard for a 19×19″ pillow)
A sewing machine and coordinating thread
Scissors
Measuring Tape
Pins
1st – Measure your pillow.  Mine was a 19×19″ square
2nd – Cut your fabric into three pieces.  I cut one 19×19″ for the front, and two 14×19″ for the back.
3rd – You will do a 1/4″ – 1/2″ hem on ONE of the 19″ sides of the 14×19″ fabric pieces (the two smaller pieces-your measurements will most likely be different.)
Your three pieces should now look like this…
4th – You will put the pillow together. You will put the right side (print side) facing in, imagine the pillow cover turned inside out.
  1.
 2.
  3.
5th – Pin the three pieces in place
TIP: If you pin it like shown in the photo, you can sew right over the pins. Something I didn’t know when I started sewing. 🙂
See…
6th – Sew around the edges of the pillow cover. I usually round the corners to avoid them looking “dog earred” when the pillow form is inside of it. Rounding them helps them to stay perked up over time.
FINALLY, turn your pillow cover inside out and put a fluffy pillow inside!
That’s it! So easy! Even for beginners!
Head over and browse my shop if you’re bored!  🙂

  1. I found this tutorial a while back (while doing a google search) and will be using it very soon to make some pillow slipcovers! I just made my daughter a pillow and used your pinning tip! It was so nice to sew straight over the pins and not worry about having to pull them out as I went!

  2. I cant believe I never knew that about the pins!! I have made several pillow forms and that would have saved me so much time and effort!!! Thanks for the tip 🙂

  3. Thanks for the tutorial. I’ve had some fabric laying around waiting to do this. Heads up, you can still break your needle if you hit a pin. I’ve always pinned like this and I know from experience.

  4. Great tutorial. I took a class at a local sewing shop a few years ago and the instructor scolded me for sewing over the pins…she said it can break or bend the needle. I wonder if it depends on the type of needle, fabric, and/or the machine? I did have a needle break once when it hit the pin and it went flying…but I am notorious for using needles for way too long so that might be why it broke. Anywho, thanks again for the tute, I’ll be recovering my throw pillows this weekend!

  5. Thank you so much! I needed a quick and easy tutorial and your’s was perfect. It made the perfect slip cover for the pillows and it doesn’t require Velcro, buttons, or magic. lol Now one down three to go, but with this tutorial they will be done in no time. 🙂

  6. I just made 3 of these with some material I’ve had for awhile. After a few minutes of trying to pin the 3 pieces together the correct way, I flew thru making the new throw pillow covers. It was so easy and fun. I want to go out & buy some more material & make some more of these!!! Thank you for the great instructions.
